Stirling University boosted their goal difference at the expense of struggling Selkirk with top scorer Chris Geddes firing four.
The eight goals scored against the basement side is most welcome for the students as they bid to topple Spartans at the top.
Selkirk’s pitch proved conducive to the passing game, an approach Stirling adopted to deadly effect. Geddes gave a glimpse of what was to follow, flashing a long range effort wide with just two minutes played before a Rob Pearson shot whistled past the post soon after.
Surprisingly, it took 24 minutes for Stirling to open their account, Geddes collecting a through pass from Danny Denholm to slot the ball past the hapless John Dodds in the Selkirk goal from 12 yards.
The lead was doubled six minutes later when a neat interchange down the left allowed Creag Robertson to drive a pass across the face of goal, which was turned into the net by a Selkirk defender.
Just before the break, Geddes netted the goal of the game. A move down the left saw Denholm to cross for the onrushing Geddes who volleyed in from eight yards.
Stirling continued their domination after the break, Geddes sealing his hat-trick, latching onto a clever Pearson pass to slot home from 10 yards.
It was soon five, courtesy of a freak own goal, occurring from a defensive back header after Stirling keeper Kevin Walker had launched one of his trademark kick-outs upfield.
Three minutes later, Craig Mason cut the ball back for Geddes and the diminutive striker steered the ball beyond the Selkirk keeper’s reach for his fourth of the afternoon and 27th goal in all competitions.
Midfielder Michael Pentland got in on the act soon after, following up on a Geddes shot which Selkirk keeper Dodds spilled into his path.
And with 10 minutes to go, recent recruit Paul Sludden completed the scoring, Geddes turning provider for the former Falkirk striker who curled the ball into the roof of the net.
Next up for the University is home match in the league on Saturday (25 February), against Tynecastle FC. Kick-off at the University is 2.30pm and all supporters are welcome.
