What to fall for this season

This autumn/winter season wise fashion followers will be layering clothes to create a stylish yet cosy winter look. Traditionally, a British winter means the more layers the better, so this trend is also highly practical. Think not only layering different kinds clothing, but also different textures, patterns and materials. For example, take a bold colour trend from A/W, such as deep purple or azure blue, and layer it under a simple black or grey knitted jumper. If you feel swamped under all the layers, add a belt to the waist. This will also be effective in reminding people you do actually have a figure, not just a square block of torso. If you feel more adventurous take a page out of Marc Jacobs’ book. His catwalk look went a step further than just jumpers, jackets and gilets, by layering dresses over trousers. This isn’t for everyone – we can’t all be Elle Macpherson and that’s just fine.

Apologies to all the vegetarians out there, because this A/W, leather is huge in the fashion world. If it goes moo, we want to wear it. Leather is the material of the season and is so versatile. From quilted skirts, to cropped jackets and trousers, every high fashion and high street designer is using black leather. Sadly, real leather is not the most affordable item for students. So if you can’t stand to eat noodles for a whole month in order to afford the real thing, some faux-leathers will do the trick. Alternatively, rummage in a vintage store for a bargain piece. Not only will the leather be worn in nicely, but it will also have a great vintage smell. If all else fails, just ask your parents for ‘textbook’ money.

If there’s one trend to go for this season, it should be wearing your clothes oversized. The fashion gods have spoken – big is beautiful. When buying a winter coat, go for a roomy and voluminous cocoon style. Skinny jeans or cigarette trousers look great with this trend as they are in direct contrast, making the oversized look even more so. If a big style of jacket is too much, just buy a coat in the next size up. This will create the same effect and make you look teeny tiny.

So, as the cold winds set in and we hurry to strap our feet into furry boots, think positive – at least we will all be looking stylish. And summer is only eight months away.
